Maarten Ornstein (NL) & Gø (FO)
Maarten Ornstein is a Dutch musician based in Amsterdam. He plays clarinets and saxophones, and works as a composer and arranger. He plays with lutenist Mike Fentross, Lebanese singer Rima Khcheich, and leads the improvised funk ensemble DASH! Additionally, he plays solo concerts and performs with Estonian mezzo-soprano Kadri Tegelmann. Maarten Ornstein is a member of Splendor Amsterdam.
Maarten Ornstein has composed for the North Sea Jazz Festival, Frances-Marie Uitti, Ties Mellema, Cappella Amsterdam, the Calefax Reed Quintet, the Metropole Orchestra, Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, pianists Gerard Bouwhuis and Daria van den Bercken, Amsterdam Sinfonietta and the Dudok String Quartet. He is currently working on an opera, to be premiered in Amsterdam in the fall of 2023. In 2022 he was awarded the Willem Breuker prize together with lutenist Mike Fentross.
Maarten Ornstein has published three books on improvisation, for solo instruments, string quartet and voice acapella. The books provide both material and techniques to learn improvisation and use it in concerts. The books are aimed at (classical) musicians looking to expand their musical horizon with the art of improvisation.
